2015 - 2018 Board Members
Matthew Tapscott (Chair)
As a proud resident of Ajax since 1987, it is a privilege and an honour to be appointed a Trustee to the Ajax Public Library Board. From an elementary student to now a father of three, over the past 27 years the library has continued to meet and exceed my changing needs. Our library is an integral part of our community. It’s not only a place for discovery and learning, it also provides a tremendous place for meeting, sharing and collaborating with colleagues, friends and peers. How our library provides its services to our community will continue to evolve to meet our members’ needs. But, one thing is for certain; the library will continue to be one of the pillars of our community.
I am a Chartered Professional Accountant with over 10 years in public practice and industry. My career has provided me with a significant amount of experience in assurance, financial reporting, internal controls and governance. I believe those experiences will help me contribute to the library’s strategy and vision to ensure we meet our goals.
Natasha Hasham (Vice Chair)
When I moved to Ajax seven years ago, the library was one of the first places I familiarized myself with. From a young age, I have always been passionate about reading and learning. Now, my young daughter and I attend Family Storytime at the library where she learns to sing songs, play games and develop a love for books. I am looking forward to getting her first library card.
As a Chartered Professional Accountant, CA I am excited to bring my financial management background to the Library Board. The library has become the central hub of the community where all age groups can find valuable resources and social support. I am honoured to be a Board Trustee and will represent the interests of the community so that the public library will always have something for everyone.
My family moved to Ajax in 2003. It was our first home after coming to Canada in 2001. Back in Pakistan we were not used to the facilities the Ajax library provided, and for my family, it was a pleasant surprise. We felt welcomed and enjoyed the pleasant environment. The library rekindled my love for reading, and my daughter got hooked on it as well.
Over the years I have seen the library grow, and I am so proud to be able to support the library in this continued growth.
Since moving to Ajax in 2005, the library has been a big part of my life. I particularly enjoy ‘Movies at the Main’ and regularly borrow audiobooks which make my daily commute immeasurably better. Over the years, I’ve become an enthusiastic advocate for the library and felt quite proud to take a friend who recently moved to Ajax to get her library card. It’s now become part of our routine to stop by the library on Sunday afternoons.
My enthusiasm for the library and its programs fuelled my decision to become a Trustee and I look forward to contributing to the growth of this vital centre of the Ajax community.
Every time I have been new to a community, the Library has been my own personal life line. I have lived in a few countries over the years, and with each move, the Library has helped me to re-establish myself, provided me with a sense of belonging and entertained me in a myriad of ways that helped me navigate the sometimes choppy, relocation waters. When I made Ajax my home in 2010, after four years in Melbourne, Australia, my first priority was to register with my library family.
I am so pleased to be able to give back to the Library and help ensure that the many benefits I have received over the years are available to others in whatever circumstances they may find themselves.
Marilyn Crawford, Councillor Ward 1
I have lived in Ajax with my family for the past 21 years. As a former School Board Trustee with the Durham District School Board I feel that it was a natural fit to be part of the Library Board. I believe the Library should be the hub of the neighborhood, a place where new residents to Ajax can come and find out about the neighborhood they have chosen to raise their family. It was so exciting for both of my children to receive their first Library cards, and I would hope every child has that same opportunity. As Councillor, I will do my part in supporting our local library.
I moved to Ajax 11 years ago. I’ve gotten to know the library well having spent hundreds of hours studying in them for my actuarial exams. Exams are over, but I still enjoy visiting the library with my two sons to borrow books and to participate in the wonderful events.
I became an avid reader later in life, reading everything from classics to comedy and science fiction. But the library is transforming into more than just a collection of books. It is a place that brings our community together to break down solitudes and facilitate lifelong learning. I am excited to bring my skill set, honed in the library, to this organization that has greatly supported me throughout my career.
The Ajax Library was one of the first places my family and I visited when we moved to area over five years ago. It was not the traditional library, and we were amazed with the array of resources available. The value-added services made our integration into the community, and Canada as a whole, so much easier. The friendly staff was always ready to guide us to the right resources, and it was truly appreciated. When the opportunity arose for Trustee, I was eager to apply.
As a doctoral candidate with over 14 years’ experience in management and technology, I am honored to be part of the team that continues to strengthen social connections and build a more cohesive and stronger community.
Before settling in Ajax 10 years ago, I lived in several other cities in Canada and abroad. In each place, the local library was part of my life. Libraries are accessible to everyone in a community and I see them as more than a "lender of books". The library of the future will be a "navigator" to help members of the community. It will provide services to help newcomers settle in Ajax, run engaging programs for youth and older adults, make digital books and media available, and provide Internet access and a quiet place.
The Ajax Public Library is already well down this path and a leader amongst its peers. So, when the opportunity to give back to the library by serving on its Board of Trustees arose, I was eager to apply. Being a long-time library patron with over 15 years of executive and senior management experience in a number of industries, I look forward to representing the community and bringing my business experience to the Ajax Public Library as it continues to grow.
