Learn Through Play with Our New Collection

Young kids playing with the Learn to Dress Monkey

We’re excited to announce a new collection to the Library – the Inclusive Toy Library.

This educational collection of toys aims to help enhance the play experience, develop skills, and allow kids of all abilities to learn as they play.

“All children need stimulation to learn. This stimulation can be the result of many different factors, including time spent at play,” says Donna Bright, Chief Librarian and Executive Officer. “Children with intellectual or physical disabilities can face significant challenges in undertaking meaningful play activities. They may not have the ability to use ‘regular’ toys due to limited mobility, or they may be in need of toys that stimulate the senses in a way that is meaningful to them.”

The complete collection will include more than 100 toys that will meet a wide variety of needs and help to enhance many different skills, including:

Auditory – hearing, listening
Fine Motor – grasping, hand/eye co-ordination
Gross Motor – large muscle movement
Language – speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary
Social Skills – interaction, turn-taking, life skills
Tactile – touch, texture, skin awareness
Thinking – cause & effect, recall, counting, matching
Visual – seeing

For example, the Learn to Dress Monkey has 11 fun activities that help kids develop fine motor, social, tactile, thinking and visual skills. They can practice how to button, snap, hook and loop, buckle, tie, zip and more! Monkey’s overalls and t-shirt are removable, too, for learning how to dress and undress. Put on his socks and lace-up sneakers for more learning fun!

Parents can borrow toys for their children to help develop these skills if they don’t have access to them at home, want to try them out or are just looking for a variety of educational, accessible toys.

To borrow toys, you must have a valid Ajax Public Library membership in good standing. You may borrow up to three toys per library card and keep them for a three-week lending period. After that, you can renew them if there are no holds.

We hope you’ll check out this exciting new collection!
