What are my responsibilities as a library member?

  • Present your library card each time materials are borrowed and, upon request, for other services as applicable.
  • Be responsible for all materials borrowed with your card.
  • Pay all fines and charges incurred for overdue, damaged, or lost library material.
  • Observe all policies and rules and regulations established by the Library Board.
  • Report the loss of a card or change of address as soon as possible (a replacement fee will apply).

How often will my library card expire and how do I renew it?

  • Library membership is renewed annually (save and except for Temporary members, as per section 2.3).
  • Annual renewals must be completed in person at any branch location.
  • All outstanding fines and charges must be paid in order to renew a membership card.
  • Members must verify their contact information. Lost or damaged library cards will be replaced at a cost to the Library member.
  • Computer Use Cards do not expire, therefore do not need to be renewed

Are there any restrictions to borrowing?

Your library card cannot be used when outstanding charges reach $20 or more.

Except for restricted movies and games, all materials may be borrowed by anyone with a valid Library card. Only adults, age 18 and older, may borrow restricted movies and games.

Parents must accept responsibility for the return of their children’s (age 17 and under) borrowed library materials and for the charges for items that are overdue, lost or damaged.

How many items can I borrow?

There are no limits to the number of books, audiobooks, magazines, comics and CDs you can borrow.

You can borrow three Inclusive Toy Library items per library card.

You can borrow an unlimited number of DVDs and Blu-rays with the exception of Quick Flicks. The borrowing limit for Quick Flicks is:

  • 3 regular Quick Flicks
  • 3 restricted Quick Flicks

How do I place a hold on an item that has been borrowed?

A customer may place holds on all materials except Quick Flicks (DVDs) and Quick Picks (books) through our catalogue. Hold notifications, made by phone (through our automated system) or email, will include a holds cancellation date. After the cancellation date, the item(s) will be placed back into circulation or passed to the next customer in the hold list.

How will I know when my hold is available to pick up?

You will be notified when your hold becomes available. Items will remain on hold for a period of five days. The requested item must be borrowed with the same library card that was used to place the hold.

How can I manage my holds?

If there is a time period when you will not be available to pick-up your hold (due to vacation, illness, etc.), you may temporarily suspend it. If you are no longer interested in an item, you may cancel your hold.

How can I suspend my hold?

Suspending your hold leaves you in the queue for the item, but your hold is skipped over for the time period requested.

You may ask a staff member to assist you, log into your online account or call our automated telephone service (905-686-CIRC (2472)) to suspend your hold request.

How can I cancel my hold?

Holds requests may be cancelled in person at any Library branch, by phone during regular Library hours, by logging into your online account or by calling our automated telephone service (905-686-CIRC (2472)).

How do I sign up for an online account?

Visit the catalogue and click on “Log In/My APL”. To register, you will need your Library card number and your PIN (usually the last four digits of your phone number). Once you have registered, you can choose to customize your username and PIN in the “Personal Information” page.
