Beginning in March, volunteers from the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) will be available to assist you with filing your 2025 tax return. The program is only available for Durham residents who have a valid Ajax Public Library card and have a modest income with simple tax situations. Eligibility:
Maximum income levels:
1 person – Up to $40,000
2 persons – Up to $55,000
Each additional dependent $5,000
Interest income less than $1,200
Determine if you have a simple tax situation:
In general, a tax situation is simple if an individual has no income or if their income comes from these sources:
- Employment
- Pension
- Benefits, such as the Canada Pension Plan, Old Age Security, disability insurance, employment insurance, and social assistance
- Registered retirement savings plans (RRSPs)
- Scholarships, fellowships, bursaries, or grants
- Interest (under $1,200)
Volunteers do not assist in the preparation of:
- Returns for deceased persons
- Returns for bankrupt individuals
- Returns for self-employed individuals
- Returns reporting capital gains
- Business or rental income
- Returns claiming employment expenses
